Back to School: How to Get Back Into a Sleep Routine
Our summer days are slowly getting shorter which can only mean the countdown to Back to School has begun. The prospect of summer vacations coming to an end is a daunting one for most because late nights and long lazy sleep-ins are ending with it!
These tips and cool clocks might help might make slipping back into an early morning routine a little easier for Back to Schoolers:
- Gradually start going to bed earlier, and getting up earlier. Make sure children and teens are getting a minimum 9 hours of sleep per night. It takes about 2 weeks to reset the internal clock.
- Establish a stable routine with something to look forward to in the mornings – the promise of a wholesome breakfast will have kids "up and at ‘em" for sure!
- Place the alarm clock far away from the bed, or set two clocks within 5 minutes of each other. Invest in a clock radio/CD if you find the alarm buzzer too jarring in the morning. The soft sounds of music or the voice of a favourite DJ might set you off on a better foot in the mornings.
- Drink lots of water before going to bed and you will have a natural reason to get up in the morning!
