Summer Hair Care
Protection & Care for Beautiful Summer Hair
The effect of the sun on our skin is no stranger to us as we are reminded every day of the importance to protect ourselves from its harmful rays.
It is no surprise then that our hair is also at risk of damage during the hot Summer months. Take note of these pointers to preserve the health of your hair and the investment you make in colouring it.
Avoid showering in, or washing your hair with hot water as the heat will dry out and damage your hair and skin. Invest in regular trims to get rid of dead ends and try to limit use of hot styling tools. These following suggestions will also be instrumental in your Summer hair routine:
Our Top Tip: To prevent your hair from absorbing chlorine, wet it with tap water before hitting the pool. Hair, like anything else, has limited absorption.
Hats & Headscarves
Cover your hair with hats or scarves to avoid exposure to the sun. A hat will also provide valuable protection for your face.
Our Top Tip: The return of the 70s inspired maxi dress paired with a big hat will provide you with a fabulously fashionable reason to protect your hair this year!
Sunscreen
Some conditioners and masks contain SPF these days but you can just as easily rub a tiny amount of sunscreen on your hands and run your fingers through your hair. Don't forget to apply sunscreen on your scalp where your hair parts.
Our Top Tip: If you can't find a sunscreen that is especially designed for your hair, opt for a non-oily regular sunscreen to avoid sporting greasy looking locks.
Shampoo
Try not to shampoo your hair as often as usual in the summer months as it strips away natural oils. If you can get away with it, just rinse your hair in a warm shower and then Condition.
Our Top Tip: If your hair requires washing on a daily basis, make sure to pick a mild, moisturizing shampoo.
Conditioner
Condition your hair every time you get it wet in the shower. Choose a deep conditioning, moisturizing conditioner, preferably with SPF.
Our Top Tip: Moisturizing conditioners specifically designed to protect colour treated hair are a worthwhile investment, particularly during the sunny summer months.
Leave-in Conditioners
While leave in conditioners will moisturize the hair throughout the day, they may have added benefit if they contain SPF. SPF helps protect your colour-treatment by preventing it from turning brassy.
Out Top Tip: To further protect your expensive hair colour, make sure to rinse your hair out with fresh water right after you swim in salted or chlorinated water.
Deep Conditioning Treatments
Deep conditioning masks and hot oil treatments are a must in your summer beauty routine. They will deep condition and repair hair and at best, should be applied once a week during the summer months.
Our Top Tip: For best results, apply a mask before hitting the sun, as the heat will the maximize penetration of the treatment into your hair.
