Perfect Pajamas
How to Choose PJs for Men, Women, Kids and Babies
The average person will spend one third of their lifetime sleeping, and that's not counting the time spent lounging in front of the TV! Too often we opt for an old t-shirt full of holes with loose jogging pants, because we naturally associate comfort with old and worn. Thankfully, today's market offers a ton of comfortable and flattering pajamas.
PJs are available in a large variety of fabrics, depending on the season, and each has it's unique benefits. Silk is the most luxurious and cooling choice, while cotton-Lycra blends offer total comfort as they stretch and move with the body. The arrival of colder temperature calls for comfy pajamas and loungewear, and flannel is a consumer favourite for warmth and comfort. Many kids' pajamas are constructed from flame resistant fabrics for added safety in case of a fire.
Because of the variety of designs and prices, pajamas have become a very popular gift idea for every occasion. Most of us love to receive them and they can be a very personal gift, depending on what style you choose. Read on for a few tips about buying pajamas for men, women, kids and babies.
Women's Pajamas
Did you know that women own an average of 7 different pairs of pajamas? Depending on the season, occasion, or mood, a woman will have different types of PJs to suit each. That's why you can hardly go wrong with the gift of pajamas for a woman!
If you're looking for a gift for a lady in your life, make sure that you know what she likes and what she feels comfortable in. Here are a few tips:
- A lot of women feel more comfortable with a little bit of support in the top, even in bed! Choose a cami or tank that has a built-in bra top or a seam right under the bust line.
- When it comes to the bottom, consider how comfortable she is with her body. Sexy is nice, but remember that pajamas are mostly about comfort. If your lady constantly complains about the size of her thighs, shorts may not be your best option, for example. Opt for a a wide-leg pant instead, and for additional modesty, silk won't cling to the skin.
- Silk, cashmere, and other luxurious fabrics are a beautiful gift, but remember that they often need to be dry-cleaned. If she has to make special trips to the cleaners, she might end up never wearing them.
- If you choose something sexy, a nice matching robe will make for a pretty cover-up over morning coffee or the front step paper run!
- If you are buying PJs to accommodate a pregnancy, choose pants or shorts that have room in the waist and belly area. The elastic should sit under the belly, and a Lycra-blend will probably provide the most comfort.
Men's Pajamas
Unless they have been gifted, many men opt to go pajama-free. If you are looking to buy your man's first PJs, size is the first thing you should consider:
- Small – Less than a 30-inch waist
- Medium – 30-34 inches
- Large – 34-38 waist
- X-Large – 38-42
Finally, men tend to generate a lot of heat when they sleep, so shirts might go un-used, Light-weight fabrics like silk or light cotton are the coolest options possible.
Kids' Pajamas
Kids PJs are a lot of fun with their bright colors and cartoon characters, but there are a few important tips to keep in mind when shopping for a child. Keep in mind that a pajama should be snug fitting and flame-resistant fabrics are also a good choice. Some kids, especially younger ones will prefer footed pajamas, but socks are just as effective for keeping little toes toasty.
Finally, choose something child is going to like so you can make bedtime as painless as possible!
Girls' Pajamas
Many little girls will choose to sleep in a nightgown or a sleep shirt, but some may feel constrained by the twisting of the clothing while they sleep.

Babies' Pajamas
Some babies are surprisingly picky about their sleepwear. If you have tried anything to get your baby to sleep and can't figure out what's wrong, try changing their pajamas. Some kids don't feel comfortable in the standard footed pajama, so you might want to try footless with socks instead. You could also try different fabrics to test what your baby is most comfortable in.
Finally, make sure to inspect all PJs for safety: appliqués and buttons could be a choking hazard.
