The slapstick sci-fi adventure Desert Punk (2004) takes place in the distant future, when the Kanto Plain (the site of Tokyo) has become a barren desert where daytime temperatures top 120 Farenheit. Kanta Mizuno is known as Sunabouza, the Desert Punk: part hired gun, part repo man, and part solider of fortune, he's a crack shot and expert tracker who'll do almost anything for a buck. But beneath his mask and hat, Kanta is just a sawed-off adolescent with a breast fixation: he gropes and ogles every female unlucky enough to cross his arid path. The desert setting and hero who vacillates between deadly skill and randy silliness suggest the filmmakers were trying to create another Trigun, but Desert Punk feels more like Burn Up Excess.
