A Love of Reading: Reviews of Contemporary Fiction
Robert Adams has developed a unique--and lucrative--practice for a book reviewer: twice yearly he lectures on contemporary fiction to sold-out audiences in Toronto and Montreal. A Love of Reading collects 18 of these talks, which survey both Canadian and international authors, from Mordecai Richler and Shyam Selvadurai to Angela Carter, Peter Carey, Barbara Kingsolver, and T. Coraghessan Boyle. The essays were obviously originally delivered orally; they are light and fast-paced, more concerned with praising books than with criticizing them. Adams's lectures will make a useful guide for those who share his taste in fiction: nothing trashy or unashamedly "pop" appears here, but neither does anything particularly avant-garde or experimental. The bulk of A Love of Reading is devoted to summarizing the plots of Adams's selections, rushing through the books cover-to-cover, with plenty of exemplary quotations and appreciative asides. He seldom advances important ideas about the books; this is anything but academic literary criticism. Many readers may expect more from a bound collection of reviews, but A Love of Reading will prove useful to browsers, book clubs, and anyone searching for a few accessible, substantial contemporary authors to dive into. --Jack Illingworth Author(s): Robert Adams.
