Wanderer-Fantasie D 760
Schubert's music has a major place in the development of piano repertoire, the Fantasie in C for Piano D760 (nicknamed The Wanderer), and the Fantasie in C for Violin and Piano D934 building on the forms of Beethoven's two sonatas Quasi una fantasia Op.27. The virtuoso demands of The Wanderer once defeated the composer's own pianistic talents, Schubert broke down in the fugue and cried, "Let the devil play the stuff! " This challenge was taken-up by Liszt, who transcribed it for piano and orchestra, S366, recorded by Leslie Howard on Liszt--Music For Piano and Orchestra Vol. 2, as well as spoofing the scherzo in the "Mephistopheles" movement of his Faust Symphony. This is richly symphonic music, in which a single piano does the work of a orchestra, and which András Schiff realises with perceptive musicality and enormous technical skill. The duo D934, written five years later in 1828, again concentrates great lyrical riches into a single brilliantly constructed movement. Haunting, passionate, intricate and ultimately exhilarating, the Fantasie in C for Violin and Piano was unsuccessful in Schubert's lifetime, but with Schiff ideally complimented by Yuuko Shiokawa, it can be appreciated as a work of great stature. The recording and packaging are immaculate. --Gary S. Dalkin Binding Audio CD. Artist(s): Andras Schiff. Publisher(s): Universal Music Group. Label: Universal Music Group. Format: Import.
