In The Falling Dark
An early favourite among fans, 1976's In the Falling Dark represents an awakening of sorts for the Canadian legend. On his previous six recordings, Cockburn had cultivated a cantankerous persona, but here he emerges as quiet, hopeful, and willing to give the morning the benefit of the doubt. Cockburn's outlook isn't the only measure of change realized here--his stylistic approach gets a thorough reworking, too. The result is a wholesale embrace of the band concept suggested on his previous album, Joy Will Find a Way. There's also a newfound sense of musical adventure, and jazzy bits and other experimentation getting some play. That's most evident on the instrumental workout "Giftbearer, " and the percussion-laden, French-language number "Vagabondage. " And, of course, there's classic, simple, acoustic-guitar-driven folk, like the tender opening track, "Lord of the Starfields, " and Cockburn's eight-minute solo epic, "Gavin's Woodpile. " The disc's uplifting closing number, "Festival of Friends, " takes listeners back to the grassy, sun-baked fields of festivals gone by. --Chuck Molgat Brand: Cockburn, Bruce. Binding Audio CD.
