Afro-Cuban Jazz
Southend based Congalero, band leader and Hi Hat DJ, Snowboy follows up Mambo Rage and the floor filling Afro Brazilian 12" of Edu Lobo's "Casa Forte", by weighing in with a typical, take-no-prisoners approach to the Afro Cuban jazz tradition. Undaunted, Snowboy joins a serious roster of Latin percussion masters (including Francisco Aguabella and John Santos) at San Francisco's Ubiquity/Cubop label and the result is exhilarating. A pillar of the UK jazz dance scene, Snowboy has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Latin and straight ahead jazz along with soul funk and it shows. From the off, on the Lucumi influenced "Oye Yeye" there's a Hammond bubbling away in the mix--a definite nod of respect to the late great Charlie Palmieri. Don't expect the subtle spiritual shifts of a John Santos album, the spirit of this album is rooted in the descarga, the jam session, where the energy rises like a rhythmic storm over the pulse of the clave. You get firing solos from a horn section that features tenor Gary Plumley and trombonist Joe De Jesus that are punctuated by Snowboy's congas and wild metallic timbales breaks. This music is guaranteed to test the skills of the dancers whether there are jazz steppers or salsa aficionados. The last track "Descarga Angixi" is absolutely outrageous. A wonderful album. --Paul Bradshaw Binding Audio CD. Artist(s): Snowboy and the Latin Section. Publisher(s): Cubop Records. Label: Cubop Records. Format: Import.
