Hotcakes & Outtakes:30 Yr. . .
Spanning three decades, this comprehensive Little Feat retrospective has a little bit of everything. Over the course of the 4-CDs and 82 songs it becomes clear how Little Feat evolved their hard-to-define but imminently infectious swamp-rock, blues and boogie sound. On Disc 4, "Studio Outakes", the very first demo tapes made by Lowell George, the mad-cap mastermind of the group, indicate the direction the band would take. Along with keyboardist Billy Payne, drummer Richie Hayward and bassist Roy Estrada, George's down and dirty slide guitar and plaintive voice made for an unusual blend of grit, intelligence and humour. Combining an off-centre Southern Californian rock sensibility (George and Estrada had both been members of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Inventions) with a love of Dixie-inspired, New Orleans rhythms, Little Feat became a quintessentially American band. Material from their classic albums is here, as well as live recordings and songs from the post-Lowell George era. After George died, the group took a needed hiatus in the 1980s, re-formed and began recording and touring again. Disc 3 chronicles the period between 1988-98 and shows Little Feat as distinctive as ever. Adding to the package is an extensive booklet by critic Bud Scoppa, which goes into illuminating depth about the band's history and idiosyncrasies. Interviews with the group's founding members provide further detail and insight. And completing this excellent project is a previously unseen original painting by the band's resident artist, Neon Park, whose cover art graced a number of their albums. This is definitive stuff, ideal for fans and newcomers alike. --Wally Shoup Binding Audio CD. Artist(s): Little Feat. Publisher(s): Rhino-Atlantic. Label: Rhino-Atlantic. Format: Best of.
