Trials & Tribulations Russell Jones

Trials & Tribulations Russell Jones
  • Manufacturer:  Riviera Records
The Trials & Tribulations of Russell Jones, Ol' Dirty Bastard's third album, was largely recorded on the run and the Wu Tang Clan member was later arrested in a McDonalds restaurant in Philadelphia. Suffice to say, it is not his best work. Despite the title (Russell Jones being ODB's real name) this is not a self-confessional record in which ODB returns to sanity. Oh no. This is a man who raps about "stinking like doo doo" has a song entitled "I Wanna F***" and is now spending 2-4 years in a New York prison. Insanity is a key part of his act and personality. If his excellent previous album Nigga Please explored ODB's party side then Trials & Tribulations delves into his dark depths, confirming his position as the Screaming Jay Hawkins of his generation. However while ODB's creative mania remains intact, the album's production feels rushed, with many of the beats sounding cheap and flat. Best track is "Caught Up" which takes off from where ODB left Kelis on "Got Ya Money". He gains a credit for determination though. Not even imprisonment has stopped ODB's musical career. He signed his latest recording contract shortly after he was put away. Unfortunately ODB's new label is a little short of the readies, hence the glut of B list guest rappers on the album including Mack 10, E-40 and Too Short. Fellow Wu Tang Clan members such as the Rza and Raekwon are notable by their absence, wisely deciding to skip this one until their Shaolin colleague is free again. It might be best if you do too. --Jake Barnes  Binding Audio CD.  Artist(s): Ol Dirty Bastard.  Publisher(s): Riviera.  Label: Riviera.  Format: Import.
