The Darker Side of Nonsens
Keen rock scholars that New York nu-metal quartet Dry Kill Logic are, The Darker Side of Nonsense sounds like they're spewing anger out through every pore; ever since Rage Against the Machine hauled their anarchism onto the international stage, anger has been the most intrinsic facet of the heavy metal sound. Dry Kill Logic's debut album is the latest in a long line of nu-metal records that rests on the axis between violent, angst-ridden catharsis rock and sample-ridden, mechanical metal grind. But beyond call-and-response metal meltdown "Nightmare"--a pretty nifty beginning to an album in anyone's book--Dry Kill Logic too often tarry a little too close to the genre's restrictive boundaries, the therapy-laden likes of "Pain" and "Weight" pounding out the lyrical clichés for all they're worth. It's only when Dry Kill Logic sound genuinely unhinged that they really seem to come together: see the wild-eyed "Rot", which nods toward the deranged hyper-metal of System of a Down, or "Give Up, Give In, Lie Down", which recalls the bolt-tight headbang dynamic of stunning British metal hopes Raging Speedhorn. That anger? Perhaps it's frustration--because Dry Kill Logic have almost turned out a great rock debut. --Louis Pattison Brand: WACR2. Binding Audio CD. Artist(s): Dry Kill Logic.
