Back to Birdland
Recorded at NYC's legendary Birdland Club in October 2000, George Shearing's Back to Birdland is an agreeable CD exercise in both nostalgia and elegance. The date reincarnates the quintet format that Shearing made almost his own in the 1950s--piano, vibes, guitar, bass and drums--and the material is a similar combination of timelessness and reminiscence: Clifford Brown's "Joyspring", Parker's "Donna Lee" and Kurt Well's "Speak Low" are especially attractive in that respect. Don Thompson takes a number of fine solos on the vibraharp, guitarist Reg Schwager is a model of taste and quiet grooviness, while the now-octogenarian leader is as lissom and harmonically canny as ever. The music on offer here is polite rather than explosive, but that is not to demean it: there will always be a suitably healthy audience for a programme of standards played with melodic grace and instinctive swing, and this set is recommended on just that basis. -- Richard Palmer Binding Audio CD.
