Into The Night
The duo of vocalist Simone Denny and self-made superstar DJ-producer Chris Sheppard deliver more buoyant dance-pop on Love Inc. 's second full-length disc, Into the Night. While hits like "Broken Bones" on the group's 1998 self-titled debut bear the vestiges of the Eurohouse sound that Sheppard helped popularize with his radio show and Love Inc. precursor BKS, much of Into the Night--especially the opener, "Come On (It's Only Love)"--emulates the sleekness of trance. Sheppard has always had a knack for combining trendy dance-floor styles with more conventionally structured pop songs. "Do Ya (Feel the Love)", "Walking in My Shoes, " and the title track all have trance's ghostly, cascading melodies, layered rhythm tracks, and ever-fluctuating momentum, yet still function well as Top 40 pop, especially the hit "Here Comes the Sunshine, " which makes good use of Denny's gospel-style vocal inflections. And even though it may seem like an act of hubris for Love Inc. to cover Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder's seminal synth-disco hit "I Feel Love, " Denny and Sheppard's version retains the original's robotic cool while giving it an oddly appropriate touch of trance. --Jason Anderson Binding Audio CD.
